Calligraphy was one of my favorite units this year. I usually struggle with painting and drawing, so it was nice to be able to do something well without having to start over a few times. In this unit I used ink, a calligraphy pen and watercolors. To start off, I practiced by copying the alphabet and my name using the ink and the pen. Then for the project I found a quote that I wanted to write using calligraphy. The quote I chose is from Winnie the Pooh. I wanted to give this piece to my sister, so I chose this quote because I thought she would like it. The font I chose was sort of a messy version of the font you might find in a story book. The water color I chose was yellow and red because Winnie the Pooh is yellow and red.

To start off this unit, I took measurements of myself that I divided by 4 in order to create figures to scale. For the 3-D figure I used wire, paper and tape to create the frame for the body. Then I covered it in plaster to finish it. For the figure drawings I copied a body onto another paper using the light box. Then I designed the outfits for 3 figures. One of the figured is wearing a wedding dress. The other two show the front and back of the dress. For these figures I used layering skills to create the color of the dress, hair and the skin. The skin color was hard to figure out at first, but worked out in the end.
For this project, I used a mold and plaster to form the face for the mask. Once the mask was dry, I used triangles of tissue paper to add color. Finally I mounted the mask onto a board for presentation.
In this unit, we carved a design into a linoleum block. In order to make these designs have two colors, two reductions must be made to the block. The reductions are made using carving tools like the v-tool and the u-tool. V-tools make precise lines while u-tools are used to remove large areas of the block. After carving the first design, we used colored ink and rolled it on to the design using a brayer. Next we printed the design onto paper. Then we carved the second design into the block followed by the repetition of applying ink and printing onto the paper.
