This year in Art 1 I learned a lot. I hadn’t taken an art class since I was in 4th grade. My strongest area of art class was definitely clay. I struggled in the areas of 2-D drawing and painting and I think it was because I couldn’t comprehend the creation of dimension in a 2-D space. With clay I was able to see the dimensions and my attention to detail allowed me to create clean and successful projects. My favorite and most successful project this year was the final project of constructing the fairy houses. As I previously explained, I enjoy clay more because I am better at it and I think it is more fun. The project that I learned the most from was the one point perspective projects. Dimension of drawings really helped me with my drawing it terms of scenery. It wasn’t one of the best projects, but I still enjoyed it. The tape projects were very fun compared to the one point perspective lesson. I think I showed a lot of growth in drawing this year between the candy wrapper drawings to the figure drawings. I was more successful in the layering of the scale drawings therefore it showed growth. One piece of artwork that I have a personal connection to is my calligraphy piece because the way I put heart into the project to later give it to my sister is how it relates to me.
If I could offer and additional feedback for this course, I would recommend doing more clay because I love clay. Also keep the fairy house project as the final project because it is a fun summer project. For lessons like colored pencil layering that are more difficult, have in depth lessons (step by step) like the one point perspective lesson. Art adds color to the world and can even have hidden messages in some pieces. Art has impacted my life because it is a fun class to escape to from my other stressful classes.

Calligraphy was one of my favorite units this year. I usually struggle with painting and drawing, so it was nice to be able to do something well without having to start over a few times. In this unit I used ink, a calligraphy pen and watercolors. To start off, I practiced by copying the alphabet and my name using the ink and the pen. Then for the project I found a quote that I wanted to write using calligraphy. The quote I chose is from Winnie the Pooh. I wanted to give this piece to my sister, so I chose this quote because I thought she would like it. The font I chose was sort of a messy version of the font you might find in a story book. The water color I chose was yellow and red because Winnie the Pooh is yellow and red.
To start off this unit, I took measurements of myself that I divided by 4 in order to create figures to scale. For the 3-D figure I used wire, paper and tape to create the frame for the body. Then I covered it in plaster to finish it. For the figure drawings I copied a body onto another paper using the light box. Then I designed the outfits for 3 figures. One of the figured is wearing a wedding dress. The other two show the front and back of the dress. For these figures I used layering skills to create the color of the dress, hair and the skin. The skin color was hard to figure out at first, but worked out in the end.
For this project, I used a mold and plaster to form the face for the mask. Once the mask was dry, I used triangles of tissue paper to add color. Finally I mounted the mask onto a board for presentation.
In this unit, we carved a design into a linoleum block. In order to make these designs have two colors, two reductions must be made to the block. The reductions are made using carving tools like the v-tool and the u-tool. V-tools make precise lines while u-tools are used to remove large areas of the block. After carving the first design, we used colored ink and rolled it on to the design using a brayer. Next we printed the design onto paper. Then we carved the second design into the block followed by the repetition of applying ink and printing onto the paper.
In the colored pencil techniques unit there were two pieces of artwork. The first piece was a drawn piece of lined paper. The second piece was a drawn piece of candy. To create these pieces I used warm colors like yellow and orange for the highlights, and cool colors such as blue and green for the shadows. Next I layered the realistic colors to the image. These colors added create the crinkled effect of the actual candy wrapper.
Linear perspective was discovered in the 17th century by architect-engineers such as Filippo Brunelleschi and Leon Battista and it was used in geometry. One point perspective is using one vanishing point in a piece of artwork. This single point allows the artist to create realistic depth to the image by having all orthogonal lines connect to that point. In this class we used one point perspective to create tape art images on the wall. We chose to create paper airplanes for out piece. We also created a collage using one point perspective by choosing a location for the vanishing point and connecting geometrical shapes to that point.
In this unit of pottery we learned how to use clay in many different ways. First we created a pinch pot where the elasticity of the clay allowed us to mold it into a small bowl. Also, in this project we used various stamps and textures to create impressions on the bowl. Another project we created was the slab tray. We used the texture of leaves and pine needles to create an interesting impression on the clay. The coil pot is a pot created by using clay rolled into rings and the end product looks like a coil. The last project created was a choice project. My choice project was a leaf tray. To create this piece, I rolled the impression of a leaf into the clay and carved the leaf out to make the clay look like a leaf. Then I put the leaf into a bowl with plastic wrap so that the clay would dry in that shape.
Once you let the clay dry for a while, for example at the end of the school day, the clay is leather hard. This stage is a good time to carve the clay. Then after more time, the clay becomes more dry and firm and at this point it is called bone dry. Greenware means the clay is bone dry and is officially ready to be put in the kiln. This stage also means that you can add water to the clay to bring it back to the elasticity stage. In the kiln the clay is fired and it undergoes chemical changes that bring it to its permanent form in the bisque stage. Now that the clay is bisque you can glaze the pottery. Glaze is a glass coating that gives the pottery a certain finish of choosing. Then the piece is fired again and the glaze becomes a permanent finish. My name is Kaitlyn and this is my blog for my art class. This blog will contain the artwork that I create in class. |
